University of Science and Technology of China was ranked no.3 in Chinese Mainland and 192th in the world in the 2011-12 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, announced Oct 6, 2011.Peking University was ranked 49th and Tshinghua University 71st.
For other universities of Chinese Mainland, Fudan University took the place of 226-250th, Nanjing University 251-275th, SUN Yat-Sen University 276-300th, Shanghai Jiao tong University and Zhejiang University 301-350th, and Harbin Institute of Technology and Wuhan University 351-400th.
The Rankings were developed in concert with their rankings data provider, Thomson Reuters, with expert input from more than 50 leading figures in the sector from 15 countries across every continent. They have created the gold standard in international university performance comparisons.
The rankings of the top universities across the globe employ 13 separate performance indicators designed to capture the full range of university activities, from teaching to research to knowledge transfer. These 13 elements are brought together into five headline categories, which are: "Teaching - the learning environment", "Research - volume, income and reputation", "Citations - research influence", "Industry income - innovation" and "International outlook - staff and students and research".

2. World's Best Universities: Asia by US News and World Report
USTC was ranked no.24 in World's Best Universities: Asia by US News and World Report announced in Oct. 18.
The U.S. News World's Best Universities rankings, based on the QS World University Rankings, evaluated schools in countries such as China, India, Singapore, and more, and identified these to be the top universities in Asia.
The ranking uses 6 separate indicators: Asian Academic Reputation, Asian Employer Review, Faculty-Student Ratio, International Faculty, International Students, Citations per Paper. USTC have high score in 1, 2 and 6 indicators and very low score in the 4 and 5 indicator in comparison.
Other Chinese Mainland Universities in the list are: Peking University was ranked 13th, Tsinghua University 16th, Fudan University 21st, Zhejiang University 27th, Nanjing University 29th, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) 33rd, Beijing Normal University 64th, Tongji University 67th, Xi'an Jiaotong University 72nd, Nankai University 73rd, Tianjin University 74th, Sun Yat-sen University 85th, Shandong University 96th.
3. QS Asian University Ranking 2011
USTC was ranked no.4 in Chinese Mainland and 24th in the 2011 QS Asian University Rankings, released May 23, 2011. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology was top.
Between 2004 and 2009, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) produced the rankings in partnership with Times Higher Education (THE). In 2009, THE announced they would produce their own rankings, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, in partnership with Thomson Reuters.
QS retained the intellectual property in the Rankings and the methodology used to compile them [citation needed] and continues to produce the rankings, now called the QS World University Rankings.
QS published the results of the original methodology in key media around the world, including US News & World Report in the USA, Chosun Ilbo in Korea, Nouvel Observateur in France, and The Sunday Times in the UK. The first of these QS-only produced rankings, which uses the original methodology, was released on September 8, 2010.
In 2009, QS launched the QS Asian University Rankings in partnership with The Chosun Ilbo newspaper in Korea. It ranks the top 200 Asian universities and has now appeared the third times.
