The Case Study and Analysis Competition of the 2014 SUM Student Entrepreneurship Camp was successfully held during the closing ceremony of the 2014 SUM camp on Sept 22nd.

Vice President of Xin An Media, Mr. Barrie Swart; Prof. Ren Minglun from Hefei University of Technology, Foreign Expert Murray Sherk from the USTC School of Management of USTC, and Prof. Zhang Jie from the USTC School of Earth and Space Sciences attended the event as judges. Dean Yu Yugang and other faculty of the School of Management of USTC were present at the closing ceremony and Prof. Yu gave the closing speech of the 2014 SUM camp.
Team A of the case study and analysis of "Wanxin Media" won the first-place honor after a half-day of competition.
There were eight teams involved in the competition from three universities (SUM: Stanford, USTC, and MIT). Teams consisting of 5 SUMer students each, with 3 from USTC and no less than one female on each team, were paired off against each other, with each pair competing on one of four specified business cases.
The business cases in the SUM competition were about iFlytek, Wanxin Media, Xingtai Holding Group, and Hefei Public Resource Center, as four important local business institutions in Hefei.
The case study and analysis started on Sept 16th. The competitors obtained deepened understanding of culture and economics through a series of training events, field research, group discussions, and presentation preparation. A highlight was the field study tour in the four institutions on Sept 17th with field observation and communication at the working site.
All eight teams did a great job in the presentations and the Q&A sections after in showcasing their study and analysis. There were sparks of thoughts from the sharing and exchanging of ideas, leading to quite animated discussion in the rounds of competition.
In the end, the honor went to Team A of the Wanxin Media case pair. The MVP (most valuable player) and Best Coach of the competition were also selected by the panel of judges.
Prof. Yu Yugang, Dean of the School of Management of USTC, together with Mr. Liu Xianjie, chief of the Hefei Public Resource Center, and Mr. Xu Jingming, VP of the iFlytek, presented the awards to the winning SUMers and congratulated them on their excellent performances.
Prof. Yu gave a closing speech to this year's SUM camp, in which he spoke highly of the event. He pointed out that the SUM camp provided a great platform for the students to exchange ideas and experience cultural differences, and thus examine problems with an international and multi-dimensional point of view in the future. This was achieved through discussion and communication with their peer SUMers, who were from different academic and cultural backgrounds. He also congratulated them on their efforts and talents, and encouraged them to progress and improve. Prof. Yu expressed his sincere appreciation for the hard work of the players, the coaches, the judges, and all who contributed to the event.
In this way, the 2014 SUM camp was successfully concluded and the SUMers left to enjoy a 3-day tour of Beijing attractions and selected famous businesses before all returned to their home universities.
