The 10th "Professor Forum" of the USTC School of Management (SOM) was held on the Mar. 31st, 2014. Prof. Wu Qiang was the invited guest to give a lecture entitled "Quantitative Measurements and Indexes for Evaluating Academic Establishment". Several students and fellow faculty members of SOM attended the forum.
Prof. Wu first introduced two classic types of methods in evaluating one's academic performances: the Peer Review Method and the Quantitative Evaluation Method, as well as the pros and cons of each type. Then he elaborated on three groups of 12 indexes in the Quantitative Evaluation Method, including:
Number of Papers: NPI-CC, Number of Papers in Nature/Science, Number of Paper on SCI/SSCI;
Citation Index: Number of citations of a single paper, total number of citations, average number of citations, frequency of citation by the ESI, papers on hot topics, impact factor, and percentile of the journals;
H Index: H-Index, G-Index, H(2)-Index, W-Index, W(q)-Index, Hα-Index, H(a,b).
Prof. Wu also explained the calculation of these indexes with examples to ensure the audience's understanding of them.
The Q&A section was quite heated with interested students and fellow researchers fully participating. Prof. Wu kindly responded to the questions and inquiries thoroughly with patience.
The 10th "Professor Forum" lasted two hours and was considered a success.
The “Professor Forum” series is hosted by the Party Committee of SOM and Youth Committee of SOM, and executed and organized by the Union of Graduate Students of SOM. Accomplished scholars and famous professors of SOM have been invited to give reports and lectures about their on-going research and the current status of their research focus domains.
This series of forums is meant to forge a platform for better faculty-student communication, enabling graduate students to access leading figures in the related fields. It also promotes a more active and positive academic atmosphere, which will surely benefit the development of the research efforts of SOM and the careers of young scholars.
