The 4th National Summer Seminar for High-quality Academic Writing in Management Science and Engineering was hosted by the National Society of Management Science and Engineering (NSMSE) and the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) on the campus of USTC from August 8th to 10th, 2014.
The opening ceremony of the seminar was held in the hall of the School of Management (SOM) building on Aug. 8th. Prof. Zhou Xianyi, vice president of USTC, Prof. Ma Qingguo, vice executive director of the NSMSE, and Prof. Yu Yugang, executive dean of SOM attended the ceremony. Yu also addressed at the ceremony. Prof. Yang Feng of SOM of USTC, also a winner of funding by the National Natural Science Foundation of China for Excellent Young Scholars, hosted the ceremony.
The seminar aimed at raising the standards of academic paper writing and promoting scientifically-organized writing in the discipline of Management Science and Engineering, thus improving the School’s capability to publish in influential journals and magazines in this area.
Several domestically renowned scholars, as well as young scholars who had published papers in top-level journals, were invited to share their experience on the issues such as academic reading and topic selection, the design of research method, the thesis writing, the use of previous research and citation, and the collection of academic resources and networking. More than 300 young scholars from universities across China attended the seminar, half of whom were either professors or associate professors.
Seven lectures on various topics and a group discussion section were included in the seminar.
Prof. Yu Yugang of USTC, a member of The Recruitment Program of Global Youth Experts of the Organization Department of the Central Committee, winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, shared his own writing experience exemplifying strategy and tactics in writing and organizing research papers.
Prof. Wu Jie of USTC, winner of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars also shared his experience with the audience.
Prof. Alec Morton of University of Strathclyde, Vice Chief Editor of IIE Transactions also contributed. Prof. Morton thoroughly demonstrated how to build an academic article of high-quality, using his own paper on "Fair Distribution of Resources" as an example.
Prof. Ge Dongdong of the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics shared his reflections and thoughts in building his drafts of articles on his Operations Research.
Prof. Linda Zhang of the School of Management of IESEG used her two papers published in top-rank journals as examples to share her tactics in academic writing.
Prof. Xiao Tiaojun from Nanjing University exemplified and highlighted issues worthy of an author's attention in every step of drafting an academic article.
Prof. Shu Jia of Southeast University, winner of the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, talked about the revision of drafts and the procedures in adapting the drafts according to the feedback from editors of journals.
The participants of the seminar grouped up for the discussion session during which they exchanged thoughts and insights about their current researches.
The seminar was considered a success, and was expected to achieve even more fruitful results in the future.
