The first Bowen Forum launched by the School of Management took place at EMBA annular classroom, Teaching Building no. 5, East Campus on the evening of Mar. 10, 2014. Prof. Hong Jin, head of the Department of Business Administration, delivered a special academic report entitled "Management of Innovation: Retrospect and Prospect", attentively watched by many teachers, undergraduates, and graduate students.
The report kicked off at 19:00 when Prof. Hong initially introduced the history of innovative studies by presenting Western historic figures, the origin of initial innovation thinking, and science history in a humorous tone. Through accounts of a romantically profound prophet and a group of dream-pursuing innovators, he brought attention to recent issues pertinent to innovation studies including service innovation, social media and innovation, the innovation industry, and technological innovation. In the light of his own research projects and team experience, he also shared some cutting-edge theories and practice in innovation studies. Then, he extended his thinking to prospects based on existing studies to put forward multiple new views such as a focus on green innovation in terms of extending the traditional industry to the service and emerging industries. During the presentation, Prof. Hong humorously engaged the audience by sprinkling eye-catching and funny cases into his speech.
Moreover, he comprehensively introduced current studies on innovation management and came up with a train of new thoughts in this regard for interested students to further explore. He also encouraged the audience to boldly innovate with wisdom, ending with some advice to graduate students about research and life choices.
In the interaction session, Prof. Hong had an active, engaging exchange with the students present. In response to their questions on "innovation and management", he would always give a reasonably convincing reply in a gentle, wise, and humorous manner that earned him thunderous applause.
At the end, Prof. Hong took a group photo with organizing students, marking a successful conclusion to the first Bowen Forum.
Following the idea of the "Professor Forum", the "Bowen Forum" is another large-scale academic exchange event organized by the School of Management with the support of the Youth League Committee and the Graduate Student Union of the School. The forum is intended to benefit students by inviting knowledgeable scholars from within the School and elsewhere, as well as political and entrepreneurial elites, to investigate hot topics at the academic frontiers and share successful project experience. The "Bowen Forum" serves as a platform to help students realize the dream of face-to-face exchange with experts, where critical thinking can be triggered and the bar of creativity can be raised by combining theory with practice. As an open academic platform and on this occasion of upcoming AACSB accreditation, it aims to extend the students' horizons and nourish their innovative thinking through use of well-equipped faculty and resources of the School, thereby realizing the School’s great mission “to generate ideas and tools to enrich management theory and practice, to develop talents and leaders to serve China.”
